Not too unusual for werewolves, he and his siblings are fraternal quintuplets, littermates. The history of the Loupes is a little shady, but they can trace their roots back to a slave, Jean-Antoine Loupe, and his mistress, Marguerite. Family legend says Jean-Antoine, named so by his owners, was brought to Haiti (then St. Domingue) from Africa by French slavers. There he met Marguerite, a fellow slave and voudoun woman, and she "put the very spirit of the wolf" into her lover. Jean-Antoine fought during the slave revolt of 1791. Jean-Antoine and Marguerite's free descendants eventually immigrated to the mainland and settled in with the mixed populace of New  Orleans.
